Old Gas Water Heater

  • STEP 1: Required tools

    – Pipe cutter
    – Hand truck
    – Screwdriver
    – Bucket (For the water)
    – Garden Hose
    – Wrenches

  • STEP 2: Turn Off the Gas Water

Once the gas valve has been found, turn off the water supply turning the knob toward the “OFF” position.

  • STEP 3: Turn Off the Main Gas Supply

    Tools needed: wrench
Use the handle that is usually located behind the gas heater.
Note: Sometimes the gas supply is closed by a nut. In this case, use a wrench.

  • STEP 4: Disconnect the Gas Supply at the Union

Tolls needed: 2 wrenches, Teflon tape, and a gas pipe cap.
The union is meant to be between the gas pipe and gas control valve. Disconnect the 2 using the 2 wretches (1 holds, one turns), secure, and cap the gas pipeline.
Use a wrench to secure the cap.

  • STEP 5: Disconnect the Gas Supply

    Tools Needed: 2 wrenches
Disconnect the gas pipe from the old water heater. It is situated on the other end of the union just broke. Here use the 2 wrenches to open it and disconnect it.

  • STEP 6: Drain the hot water

Use the home sink to drain off the water making it run until it comes out cold – this operation might take about 10 minutes.
Note: make sure that all the hot water has gone, otherwise there is a risk of sustaining burns.

  • STEP 7: Connect the garden hose to the drain valve

Tools needed: garden hose and bucket (Optional)
Depending on the house, either connect the garden hose and place the other hand in a bucket or outside, possibly in the garden or anywhere that allows us to drain off all the water in the tank.

  • STEP 8: Turn Off the Cold Water Supply

Tolls needed: wrench or pair of pliers
This is normally done from the top of the water heater. There are 2 pipes on the top of it, turn off the one of the incoming cold water.

  • STEP 9: Open the Drain Valve and drain all of the water

    Tools needed: flathead screwdriver
In this case, either open the pipe with a handle or with a flathead screwdriver.
    What to do now:
    1. Open the drain valve
    2. Open the hot water faucet on of the home sinks (This will drain the water faster).
    3. Drain the water completely.
Note: some sediments might block the tank and stop it from draining completely. This is also why a qualified professional is needed to remove the old gas heater for you.
    4. Remove the garden hose.

  • STEP 10: Disconnect the Temperature & Pressure (T&P) Relief Valve

    Tools needed: wrench
From the side of the water heater – near the top – disconnect the valve.
Note: It can’t be re-used. A new one will be provided with your new heater.

  • STEP 11: Remove the Vent Pipe

Allow it to cool and then disconnect it from the draft hood. This is the thickest of the pipes on the top of the boiler, located between the water pipes.

  • STEP 12: Disconnect the 2 water pipes

Tools needed: 2 wrenches or pipe cutter
As mentioned above, one is for the incoming cold water, one is for the outgoing hot water. If the pipes are made of copper, cut them about 4 inches from the unit. If they are galvanised loosen the nuts to open the pipe.
