5 Reasons Why Is My Electric Radiator Not Working?

By Dynamic Heaters

There is nothing more frustrating than when your radiator stops working throughout the winter months, right? It can be incredibly irritating, and not to mention, very cold! This is not uncommon for cheaper, low quality electric heaters and on a daily basis we see some of the same problems over and over again. With that being said, below we are going to take a look at some of the different reasons why your electric radiator may not be working and what you can do about it.

An issue with the electrical cord

Firstly, one reason why your electric heater may not be working is that there is a problem with the electric cord. An electric cord can become damaged and may stop working, which, in turn, has an impact on the heater and how it works. Therefore, a good place to start is by checking the cord to see whether or not there are any breaks. If there are, this will need to be replaced. In some cases, if the cable is non accessible to be repaired or replaced this might require a new electric heater.

Check the thermostat

The thermostat is often the cause of the issue if your electric heater is not working. It could have become faulty, gone loose, shorted or gotten stuck. Take a look at the thermostat and see what level it is set at right now. If it is on a low temperature or it is set at the ‘off’ position, try turning it up and see whether or not it starts working now. Nevertheless, keep a check on it to make sure that it then does not stop working because of the auto safety shut off feature, which is something we will look at in the next paragraph. There are cases whereby the thermostat button or control can become faulty or get stuck. Because of this, the electric heater may not provide sufficient heat, get up to full temperature or may not work at all. Check the thermostat, and if needed, get in touch with a professional who can replace it for you.

Auto safety shut off

Aside from the issues that we have mentioned so far, another reason why your electric heater may not be working could be because of the auto safety shut off feature, which a lot of radiators have these days. When a heater gets too hot, this feature can turn the device off for safety reasons. After all, if your heater is getting too hot, this can indicate something is not working correctly or there is an underlying fault. It can also be caused by drying clothes or washing over the radiator itself. A good way to find out whether this is the cause is to reset the feature by turning the radiator off at the power and then turning the device back on after about 20 minutes. If it works again, it could just be that you’ve had your heater on for too long. If there are still issues, it could mean that the auto safety is not resetting and it makes sense to get in touch with an expert who can help you.

A blown fuse

A different reason as to why your electric heater may not be working is because of a blown fuse. To check this, you should unplug the radiator first, and then check the fuse box in your property to see if there are any blown fuses or a tripped circuit breaker. If it is one of these issues, you can either reset the circuit breaker or replace the fuse. The appliance can then be plugged back in and turned on. If the issue has been resolved, great. If not, the best thing to do is get in touch with an electrical professional so that they can get to the bottom of the issue for you.

An issue with the power supply

Last but not least, one of the most common reasons why electric heaters stop working is because there is an issue with the power. You will need to ensure that power is accessible from the main supply. If it is, check the switch itself to determine whether or not it is working correctly. You can do this by connecting a different power device to the switch and then finding out whether or not it works. If the device does not turn on, the issue is most likely with the switch, and this is what needs to be repaired or replaced.
